With the performances Absenteeism by Benoît Piéron and

Co-produced by Salzburger Kunstverein and Kunstverein Hannover
Co-curated by Mirela Baciak and Christoph Platz-Gallus

The performance program When the Body Says Yes (Or Maybe) showcases new works by Perel and Benoît Piéron. Perel invites the audience to explore the space of mourning in a nonlinear and nonbinary way, asking what it means to perform in the drag of a dead relative, and whether the line between the living and the dead is quite so fixed. Piéron’s new work echoes remarks from his school reports of school absences related to illness and hints at a deeper exploration of presence and absence through the non-muscular perspective.

Absenteeism by Benoît Piéron

Benoît Piéron is a French artist whose work often deals with his history of illness within a labyrinth of emotional tangles, health systems, and assignments. The literary reflection of his biography against the backdrop of institutional mechanisms is the focus of his performance.

Re(v)ul(v)ulation by Perel

With a performance ritual, Perel explores aspects of personal coping with the recent death of their mother. Through movement and clothing, posture, and music, a performative space is created that allows both joyful and painful memories. Rock and folk music from the 1960s and 1970s serve as a vehicle to create emotional access to non-linear and non-binary grief. The complex relationship between closeness and distance within families before and after death plays a role here, as does the intergenerational transmission of trauma.
